Muon Production in Relativistic Cosmic-Ray Interactions

چکیده
Cosmic-rays with energies up to 3×1020 eV have been observed. The nuclear composition of these cosmic rays is unknown but if the incident nuclei are protons then the corresponding center of mass energy is √ snn = 700 TeV. High energy muons can be used to probe the composition of these incident nuclei. The energy spectra of high-energy (> 1 TeV) cosmic ray induced muons have been measured with deep underground or under-ice detectors. These muons come from pion and kaon decays and from charm production in the atmosphere. Terrestrial experiments are most sensitive to far-forward muons so the production rates are sensitive to high-x partons in the incident nucleus and low-x partons in the nitrogen/oxygen targets. Muon measurements can complement the central-particle data collected at colliders. This paper will review muon production data and discuss some non-perturbative (soft) models that have been used to interpret the data. I will show measurements of TeV muon transverse momentum (pT ) spectra in cosmic-ray air showers from MACRO, and describe how the IceCube neutrino observatory and the proposed Km3Net detector will extend these measurements to a higher pT region where perturbative QCD should apply. With a 1 km2 surface area, the full IceCube detector should observe hundreds of muons/year with pT in the pQCD regime.

Charm Production and High Energy Atmospheric Muon and Neutrino Fluxes
Production of muons and neutrinos in cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere has been investigated with Monte Carlo models for hadronic interactions. The resulting conventional muon and neutrino fluxes (from π and K decays) agree well with earlier calculations, whereas our prompt fluxes from charm decays are significantly lower than earlier estimates. Charm production is mainly considered a...
متن کاملMeasuring the Cosmic Ray Muon-Induced Fast Neutron Spectrum by (n,p) Isotope Production Reactions in Underground Detectors
While cosmic ray muons themselves are relatively easy to veto in underground detectors, their interactions with nuclei create more insidious backgrounds via: (i) the decays of long-lived isotopes produced by muon-induced spallation reactions inside the detector, (ii) spallation reactions initiated by fast muon-induced neutrons entering from outside the detector, and (iii) nuclear recoils initia...
متن کاملCoherent Cosmic - Ray Model Based on " Direct " Muon Production
We consider a cosmic-ray muon model in which a "directly produced" muon component with the same slope as the primary spectrum is added to the conventional pion-derived muons. It is found to be consistent with recent burst measurements, horizontalair-shower data, atmospheric gamma-ray fluxes, and muon spectrograph measurements. It may also explain the anomalous mu-less air showers. The model req...
متن کاملAtmospheric muons and neutrinos from charm
We have updated our previous investigation of the production of muons and neutrinos in cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere, taking account of recent results from the ep collider HERA in our QCD-based model for hadronic interactions. Qualitatively, our previous results remain unmodi ed: our predictions for the conventional muon and neutrino uxes agree with earlier calculations, whereas t...
متن کاملHIGH-ENERGY COSMIC-RAY MUONS UNDER THICK LAYERS OF MATTER I. A Method to Solve the Transport Equation∗
An effective analytical method for calculating energy spectra of cosmic-ray muons at large depths of homogeneous media is developed. The method allows to include an arbitrary (decreasing) muon spectrum at the medium boundary and the energy dependence of both discrete (radiative and photonuclear) and continuous (ionization) muon energy losses, with resonable requirements for the high-energy beha...
